Budgeting without connecting your bank

You don’t need to give any app access to your account to know where your money goes. A simple habit and a few minutes a week are enough.

Why manual instead of automatic?

Apps that connect to your bank pull your transactions automatically. Convenient — but it also means the app or its provider can see your account: every payment, every payee, your balance.

Logging expenses yourself has an upside automation can’t give you: you see each amount the moment you enter it. That moment of attention is enough for many people to spend more deliberately.

Start with recurring bills

First add what comes back every month: rent, power, internet, phone, insurance, subscriptions, loan instalments. It’s usually the biggest block — and the only one you know in advance.

Once those are in, you know straight away what’s really left for the rest of the month.

Routine: 15 minutes a week

You don’t have to log every coffee on the spot. One fixed slot a week is enough:

  • go through receipts and bank notifications from the last 7 days,
  • log expenses into a few categories (groceries, home, transport, health, leisure, other),
  • tick off paid bills,
  • check what’s left until payday.

End of the month: one question

Instead of judging every purchase, ask one question: which category surprised me most? That’s your one thing for next month — nothing more.

To dig deeper, export your expenses to CSV and open them in a spreadsheet.
