Never miss a document expiry date
An expired ID usually shows up at the worst moment — at the airport, the bank or the notary. A few reminders are all it takes to avoid it.
Renewals take longer than you think
Identity documents are not issued on the spot. In Germany, for example, producing a new ID card takes about 2–3 weeks; in Poland you should apply for a new ID card at least 30 days before the old one expires and collect it within 30 days. Add the time it takes to get an appointment.
What else expires
Keep every document with a deadline in one place:
- ID card and passport (check the destination’s validity rules before you travel),
- car insurance and roadworthiness test,
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC),
- warranties, contracts with notice periods, bank cards.
Two reminders instead of one
For documents with a waiting time, set an early reminder (e.g. 2 months before expiry) and a second one close to the date. The first gives you time to book the appointment, the second catches the case where you ignored the first.
A photo of the document helps if you lose it: number and issue date are at hand.
